McCalls 7357

McCalls 7357 was a free gift with Love Sewing issue 49 and I thought it would prefect for one of the Seasalt fabrics I bought for half price in the Seasalt sale.

Loose fitting pullover tops have neckband self lined yokes, applied tab, side front and side back seams, three-piece sleeves, shaped hemline, and narrow hem. A, B: Stitched hem on sleeves.  B:Front sleeve and side slits.  C: Purchased trim. C,D: Sleeves gathered into binding.  NOTE Separate pattern pieces are include for cup sized A/B, C,D.

I made view C, size 14,   Cup size C.

The front band is closed together with hooks and eyes, I didn’t bother with this and just hand stitched the bands to together, I still need to wear a camisole underneath so I may yet put a few more stitches in.

Simple Sew Pattern – Tania Blouse

Never the most regular of bloggers, this break has been longer than I anticipated.  After the happiness and excitement of my sons wedding back in May my father was taken ill and after 10 weeks in hospital  he sadly died.  He was exactly 2 months short of his 94th birthday.

I have tried to blog a number of times in the last month but I  found it just didn’t happen, but I have been stitching way.

We are spending a week in a holiday cottage in rural Sussex with lovely views and Wi-Fi, so I am going to try and catch up with my reader and blogging backlog.

So on with the sewing.  Tania is a bias tie blouse featured in Love Sewing magazine issue 41, if  you didn’t buy the magazine its  also available as a free PDF download from Simple Sew.

More of my sale bargain Liberty Tana Lawn fabric seemed prefect for this simple top,  I love this Isle of Wight fabric.

There is not much to say about this make, its very simple and do love any excuse to make and use bias binding.

and on the beach at my favourite seaside, Sidmouth, East Devon.

I found a  great little fabric shop while we were wandering around the town called  Sidmouth Fabric and Haberdashery they stock a good range of quilting and dressmaking fabrics, but I was very good and didn’t buy any more fabric!

Simplicity 2369 – Wrap Top

This pattern has been in my pattern stash, ignored and unloved since 2011 when it was a free gift with Sew magazine, its been quite a hit with sewing community, and I can understand why, easy to sew and easy to wear.

I really want to improve  my skill and feel confident sewing with jersey/knits on my sewing machine (I don’t have an overlocker) so this pattern seemed ideal, a wrap top or dress with raglan sleeves.

I used a size 14 for the shoulder area grading out to a 16 for the seams.  I also cut about 3 inches off the bottom.

All sewn up on my sewing machine using a ballpoint needle and a stretch stitch.

Top stitched with a twin ballpoint needle.

While waiting for the twin needle to be delivered, and being impatient I stitched the hem of the wrap section with a fancy stretch stitch, but I wish I had waited for the twin needle, which I feel would have looked better.

Browsing the internet looking for a suitable buckle for this top I couldn’t resist this little lot found on Ebay

I’m a sucker for the nautical look, so bought this fabric on a whim as I have never used a knit before and with no pattern in mind, it sat in my sewing room for nearly a year.  With no experience of  knit or jersey fabric, and not even sure what the difference is, or are they the same thing? I read blogs with advice about sewing with stretch fabric, discovered that an overlocker is both amazing and scary.  Anyway this 1960’s pattern which I have made before  in cotton lawn, suggests jersey as a suitable fabric, so I thought it was worth having a go.

I used a ballpoint needle and the stretch stitch on my sewing machine and the  overedge foot to finish the facings and seams.   The only problem was with the buttonholes, my machine decided it would only stitch one side of the buttonhole!!  As the opening is not necessary anyway,  I stitched it up down the back.

Searching for Nautical buttons on ebay found these anchors.

This top was so easy to make and comfortable to wear, its become of my favorites to wear with jeans.
